Jane Hayes was a girl who died of consumption that year in the home when she was only sixteen. Ever since then, residents in the house have reported seeing the transparent figure of a girl with long, flowing blonde hair, wearing a wispy nightgown wandering from room to room. The Hayes family, who lived in the house until the early part of the 20th century passed the tale down to the current owners.

The information about this ghost, including name and date of death is specific enough to provide the basis for some actual research. The 1850 North Carolina census does list several Hayes families that were living in Orange County at the time, but there's no mention of a Jane.
