
The first English settlers to the New World tried their luck on the North Carolina coast. The fate of this Lost Colony was the first of many legends that would be told by the people who came to this land. The isolation of the islands of the outer banks was so complete that until the intrusion of radio and television onto the islands, small fishing villages still spoke in an Elizabethan dialect that had been extinct elsewhere for hundreds of years. This hard but rewarding life filled with remarkable characters, gave rise to many ghost tales and legends from the North Carolina coast.
Once a prosperous and fun-living town that gave shelter to Blackbeard the pirate, Bath town at the mouth of the Pamlico River is now little more than a sleepy and forgotten spot on a map. Was it the angry words of an itinerant evangelist that condemned the town?
Standing at the edge of America, astride the mighty gulf stream, Cape Hatteras is an all too likely target when hurricanes sweep in. But when those tropical winds blow, the ghost of a drowned sailor walks the shores to warn the islanders that a storm is coming.
